RESEARCHES
The Research Program on Biodiversity Characterization, Conservation, Restoration and Sustainable Use –BIOTA aims to map and analyze biodiversity, including fauna, flora and microorganisms. And also to assess the possibilities of sustainable exploitation of plants or animals with economic potential and to support the formulation of policies for the conservation of forest remnants. The projects are developed under the responsibility of a Principal Researcher linked to higher education and research institutions in the State of São Paulo. Selection is made through peer review.
› Search for bioactive metabolites with antiparasitic action in plant species from Atlantic Forest and Cerrado regions – a chemical, phenotypical, and metabolomic approach
In the present project, the prospective studies of bioactive molecules will be continued, especially with antiparasitic action (antileishmanial, antitrypanosomal and/or anthelmintic), originating from plant species belonging mainly to Annonaceae, Asteraceae, Lauraceae and Piperaceae occurring in Atlantic Forest and “Cerrado” areas of the State of São Paulo…
› Challenges to the conservation of amphibians and squamate reptiles, with emphasis on the Brazilian fauna: from basic information to conservation actions
Brazil has about 2,000 species of amphibians and reptiles, several of which are endangered, which entails an enormous responsibility for our Country to conserve them. In this project, as a way to contribute to the conservation of amphibians and squamate reptiles, with an emphasis on Brazil…
› Ecosystem services applied for managing urban conservation units: technical guidelines for public policies and environmental planning instruments integration
The management of conservation units, especially in urban areas, face major challenges dealing with economic development and conservation. For protecting the integrity and management of urban protected areas, the main objective is to propose technical guidelines to strengthen the tiering guided by environmental planning instruments in the taking decision of urban planning, considering different scales of supply and demand for ecosystem services…
› Phylogeography, population genomics and speciation of naturally fragmented populations of Bromeliaceae
Neotropics encompass large number of hotspot regions to conservation, however the knowledge about patters and process responsible to shape its outstanding biodiversity are still emerging…
› Designing and synthesis of bioactive compounds from marine algae against schistosomiasis
Schistosomiasis is an endemic parasitic disease caused by Schistosoma worms having freshwater snails as intermediate hosts. The disease affects around 250 million people worldwide, and more than 6.8 million in Brazil…
› Animalcule Project: investigating microscopic biodiversity
Since the seventeenth century microscopes are used for microscopic life observation. The use of microscopes has played an important role in both the study and teaching of biology, but many schools do not have infrastructure to teach practical lessons using such equipment…
