On August 4, 2015, the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) published the list of experts and young researchers who will contribute to its regional assessments, as well as thematic assessments on land degradation and restoration. Their participation is part of an IPBES pilot program aimed at training a pool of competent young professionals to continue the platform’s work.
The 32 young fellows selected from 480 applicants include three Brazilian researchers:
Juliana Sampaio Farinaci (National Institute for Space Research – INPE), Rodolfo Jaffe Ribbi (University of São Paulo) and Marina Monteiro (Federal University of Goiás). Juliana and Rodolfo, both post-docs from their respective institutions, became members of IPBES Americas regional assessment, while Marina is part of IPBES Land degradation and restoration assessment team.
Another 14 senior Brazilian researchers are also part of the IPBES assessment team: Cristiana Simão Seixas (NEPAM/UNICAMP), one of the 3 coordinators of the Americas regional assessment, Adriano Paglia (UFMG), Fabio Scarano (UFRJ and FBDS), Helder Queiroz (Mamirauá Institute), Mercedes Bustamante (UnB), Nathan Vogt (IPAM), Tatiana Gadda (UFPR), Jean Paul Metzger (USP) and Jean Ometto (INPE) are also part of the Americas regional assessment, Silvia Ziller (Hórus Institute) is on the Invasive species assessment team, and Daniel Vieira (EMBRAPA), Pedro Brancalion (USP), Ricardo Rodrigues (ESALQ/USP) and Sergius Gandolfi (ESALQ/USP) are in the Land degradation and restoration assessment team.
